Small Group Counseling Services
Groups are often an underutilized, yet very rewarding and effective form of mental health support. Guidance from the group leader, along with support and feedback from group members, can offer excellent opportunities for learning and growth. Groups also help to normalize one's own challenges in life and put them into perspective. Groups can be fun, informative, and very beneficial for addressing difficulties with: social interaction, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, stress management, and more! In a world full of cell phones, social media, texting, and isolation- we need more opportunities for face to face interaction to connect to people, and groups are a great way to do this.
Each group will meet once a week for six weeks, with each weekly session lasting for 55 minutes. The group is led by Kristen Macks, a licensed school counselor who will serve as the group facilitator. Group time consists of teaching, discussion, and processing time. Each group experience is unique based upon the group member dynamic, but the ultimate goal is for members to leave the group feeling connected with others and themselves, and with more confidence and tools for success and coping.
The goal of this group is to discuss the specific challenges and pressures which are unique to females today. Weekly discussions will include: impacts of social media and cell phone use, identifying healthy and toxic relationships, developing a positive self image and self-acceptance, learning effective coping strategies to deal with stress and anxiety, setting smart goals, and making positive lifestyle choices. The group will include a journal as well as uplifting activities aimed at promoting team building in a caring and supportive environment.
Ages: 9-10, 11-13, 14-17
Social Skills Development
The goal of this group is to develop effective social and communication skills. Weekly discussions will include: identifying verbal & non-verbal communication skills, appropriate use of social media, problem solving, empathy and perspective taking, healthy relationships, managing emotions, and recognizing how our behavior impacts others. Activities will include team building exercises and role playing in a fun and supportive environment, the ultimate goal being to better connect to the world around us.
Co-ed, Ages 11-13, 14-17 ***Younger age groups may be offered as well. If interested, please fill out the form to be notified of future group offerings.
College Transition Boot Camp
This group is specifically designed for those students planning to enter college in the fall. Aimed at preparing teenagers for the transition to college life, this "boot camp" will take a serious look at difficult issues. Weekly discussions will include: setting long and short term goals (educational and personal), identifying resources at your college (counseling, tutoring, security), getting involved in group organizations, healthy and toxic relationships, recognizing signs of abuse and depression, developing coping skills and a safety plan, preparing for peer pressure, and making positive choices. Participants will be given a binder to keep resources. Activities will be fun yet informative while tackling these challenging issues. Co-ed, Ages 17-19
